How Does DTF Printing Work?

The DTF printing process can be broken down into several key steps:

1. Design Creation and Printing:

First, your desired design is created or selected digitally. This design is then printed onto a special PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) film using a specialized DTF printer equipped with DTF inks. These inks are formulated to adhere to the film and transfer effectively to fabric. The printing is typically done in CMYK colors, with a white layer printed on top to ensure opacity and vibrancy, especially on darker garments.

2. Adhesive Application:

Once the design is printed on the film, a layer of hot-melt adhesive powder is applied evenly over the wet ink. This powder is crucial for the transfer process, acting as the binder between the ink and the textile.

3. Transferring the Design:

The prepared film, now with the design and adhesive, is placed onto the target fabric. A heat press machine is used to apply a specific amount of heat and pressure for a set duration. The heat melts the adhesive powder, which then bonds the ink design to the fabric fibers. The optimal temperature, pressure, and time will vary depending on the fabric type and the specific materials used.

4. Peeling the Film:

After the heat press cycle, the PET film is peeled away from the fabric. This leaves the printed design permanently adhered to the garment. The peeling can be done either when the film is hot or cold, depending on the type of adhesive and film used. The result is a vibrant, detailed, and durable print.
