What is the NDA Exam?

The National Defence Academy (NDA) exam is a highly competitive examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for admission to the Army, Navy, and Air Force wings of the NDA and the Indian Naval Academy (INA). It is a gateway for young individuals aspiring to join the Indian Armed Forces as commissioned officers.

Eligibility Criteria for NDA Exam

Before diving into the application process, it's crucial to understand the eligibility requirements:

Nationality:

Candidates must be citizens of India. Gorkha subjects of Nepal, or persons of Indian origin who have migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, and East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India, are also eligible. However, in the case of candidates belonging to categories other than Indian citizens, a certificate of eligibility will be required from the Government of India.

Marital Status:

Unmarried male candidates are eligible. Candidates who are already studying in a recognized university or appearing for the final year of a qualifying examination are also eligible to apply, but they will have to produce proof of passing the examination at the time of submission of their application to the Services Selection Board (SSB).

Age Limit:

The age limit for the NDA exam is strictly between 16.5 years and 19.5 years. This means a candidate must have been born not earlier than July 2, 2004, and not later than January 1, 2007, for NDA I 2024, and similarly for subsequent exams. The exact dates change for each examination cycle.

Educational Qualifications:

The educational qualifications differ slightly depending on the wing of the Armed Forces a candidate wishes to join:

• For Army Wing of NDA: Candidates must have passed the 10+2 examination or equivalent from a recognized Board or University.
• For Air Force and Naval Wings of NDA and for 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme of Indian Naval Academy: Candidates must have passed the 12th class examination or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a recognized Board or University.

Candidates appearing for the final examination for 10+2 or equivalent are also eligible to apply, but they must submit proof of passing the examination by a stipulated date, usually before the SSB interview.

Application Process for NDA Exam

The NDA exam application process is conducted entirely online through the official UPSC website (upsc.gov.in).

Step 1: Registration

Visit the UPSC NDA application portal and click on 'Online Application for National Defence Academy & Naval Academy Examination'. You will need to fill in basic details such as name, date of birth, father's name, mother's name, nationality, marital status, and contact information. You will then be required to create a registration ID and password.

Step 2: Part II Application

After successful registration, candidates need to proceed to Part II of the application. This involves uploading scanned images of a photograph and signature in the prescribed format and size. You will also need to fill in more detailed information, including educational qualifications, communication address, and choice of exam center.

Step 3: Fee Payment

Candidates are required to pay the examination fee. The fee amount is typically INR 100. Women candidates and candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe are exempted from payment of fee.

Step 4: Application Submission

After completing all the above steps, review all the details carefully and submit the application form. It is advisable to take a printout of the filled application form for future reference.

Examination Structure

The NDA exam consists of two main stages:

1. Written Examination:

• Mathematics: This paper tests your knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, calculus, statistics, probability, etc. It is conducted for 300 marks.
• General Ability Test (GAT): This paper comprises two sections: English (200 marks) and General Knowledge (400 marks). General Knowledge includes Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography, and Current Events.

The total marks for the written examination are 900.

2. Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview:

Candidates who qualify in the written exam are called for the SSB interview, which is a rigorous five-day process. It includes intelligence and personality tests, group testing, psychology tests, and a conference. This stage carries 900 marks.

Medical Examination:

Candidates who successfully clear the SSB interview undergo a thorough medical examination to ensure they meet the physical and medical standards required for the armed forces.

Final Selection

The final merit list is prepared based on the aggregate marks obtained in the written examination and the SSB interview. Candidates are then allotted to the Army, Navy, or Air Force based on their rank, preference, and availability of vacancies.
