How to perform ghusl

What is Ghusl?

Ghusl (Arabic: غسل‎), also known as Gusul or Ghusl Janabah, is an Arabic term meaning 'full ritual purification'. It is a bath that is required to be taken by Muslims to achieve a state of ritual purity before performing certain acts of worship, such as the Salat (prayer) or touching the Quran.

When is Ghusl Obligatory?

Ghusl becomes obligatory after the occurrence of certain events that break ritual purity, commonly referred to as 'major impurities'. These include:

• Sexual intercourse: When the male organ is inserted into the female organ, regardless of whether ejaculation occurs.
• Ejaculation: The emission of semen, whether during sleep (wet dream) or wakefulness.
• Menstruation (Hayd): The cessation of menstrual bleeding for women.
• Post-natal bleeding (Nifas): Bleeding after childbirth for women.
• Death: For those who wash a deceased Muslim (though this is a specific type of ghusl with its own rulings).
• Conversion to Islam: It is recommended for new converts to perform ghusl.

How to Perform Ghusl

The performance of ghusl is relatively straightforward, with the core principle being the washing of the entire body with water. The steps are as follows:

1. Intention (Niyyah): Begin with the intention in your heart to perform ghusl for purification. This intention is crucial for the validity of the ghusl. You do not need to say it aloud.
2. Bismillah: It is recommended to say 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) before starting.
3. Wash Hands: Wash your hands thoroughly up to the wrists three times.
4. Wash Private Parts: Cleanse any impurity or filth from your private parts.
5. Perform Wudu (Ablution): Perform wudu as you would for prayer. This typically includes washing the face, arms up to the elbows, wiping the head, and washing the feet. While some scholars consider a full wudu before ghusl to be recommended (sunnah), others consider it part of the ghusl itself if done correctly within the bath. The key is that all parts are washed.
6. Wash Head: Pour water over your head three times, ensuring it reaches the roots of your hair and scalp. Men should ensure water reaches the scalp, and if they have a beard, they should run their fingers through it to ensure water penetrates.
7. Wash Body: Pour water over your right side, then your left side, ensuring that every part of your body is washed. It is recommended to start from the head and move downwards. Pay special attention to areas that are typically harder to wash, such as the armpits, navel, and behind the ears.
8. Final Wash: You can optionally wash your entire body again after the initial washing.

It is important to ensure that no part of the body remains dry. If wearing tight clothing that prevents water from reaching the skin, it should be removed or adjusted. Water should be clean and pure. The process can be done in a shower, bathtub, or any place where water can be collected and used.

What Invalidates Ghusl?

Ghusl is invalidated if any of the following occurs before its completion:

• Any of the acts that necessitate ghusl in the first place (e.g., sexual intercourse, ejaculation).
• The emission of urine or feces.
• The emission of impure substances like semen or pre-seminal fluid (mani or mazi) after the intention of ghusl but before its completion.

Once ghusl is completed correctly, the person is in a state of ritual purity and may perform acts of worship.
