What is the Future Farmers of America?

The Future Farmers of America (FFA), officially known as the National FFA Organization, is a youth leadership organization dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success. The organization serves students enrolled in agricultural education programs at the high school and middle school levels across the United States.

History and Mission

FFA was founded in 1928 by a group of students and educators who recognized the need to support young people pursuing careers in agriculture. Originally named the Future Farmers of America, the organization evolved to become the National FFA Organization in 1988 to better reflect its expanded mission beyond traditional farming to include agribusiness, forestry, horticulture, and natural resource management. Today, FFA serves as one of the largest youth organizations in the United States.

FFA Membership and Programs

With over 735,000 members organized into approximately 16,000 chapters, FFA provides opportunities for students to develop leadership skills, build confidence, and explore career possibilities in agriculture. All chapters are advised by agriculture teachers who guide student activities. Membership is open to any student enrolled in an agricultural education course, regardless of background or farming experience.

This hands-on experience develops practical skills and provides valuable career exploration opportunities.

Career and Educational Impact

FFA helps prepare students for careers in agriculture and related fields including agricultural science, agribusiness, environmental management, and food production. Many FFA members pursue higher education in agriculture, studying at land-grant universities and agricultural colleges.
