What is IQOS

IQOS is a tobacco heating device that represents a new category of nicotine products. Unlike traditional cigarettes, which burn tobacco at temperatures exceeding 800°C, IQOS heats tobacco to approximately 350°C. This lower temperature produces a nicotine-containing vapor without combustion, which is why it's sometimes called a heat-not-burn product. The name IQOS stands for 'I Quit Ordinary Smoking,' reflecting the product's positioning as an alternative to conventional smoking.

How IQOS Works

The IQOS system consists of a pocket charger, a holder device, and specially designed tobacco sticks. A tobacco stick, called HEETS or TEREA depending on the market, is inserted into the holder. The holder heats the tobacco to the precise temperature needed to release nicotine and flavor without combustion. This process takes about 20 seconds, and a single stick provides approximately 6 minutes of use. After use, the holder can be cleaned and is ready for the next stick without additional preparation.

Global Availability and Regulations

Since its launch in 2014, IQOS has expanded to more than 80 countries worldwide, including the United States, many European countries, and parts of Asia. However, regulations vary significantly by region. In some countries, IQOS is heavily regulated or restricted, while in others it's more readily available. Some jurisdictions have specific age restrictions, marketing limitations, taxation policies, and packaging requirements for these products.

Health Considerations and Safety

Philip Morris has promoted IQOS as a reduced-risk alternative to cigarettes, and independent studies have shown that it produces fewer toxic chemicals than traditional cigarettes.
