Network Ping Definition

In networking, ping is a utility program that tests the reachability of a host on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. It works by sending Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) echo requests to a target device and waiting for echo replies. Ping measures the round-trip time it takes for data packets to travel from your computer to a destination and back, displayed in milliseconds (ms).

How Network Ping Works

When you run a ping command on a destination (like google.com), your computer sends small data packets to that address. The destination device receives these packets and sends them back immediately. Your computer then records how long this process took. Ping displays the response time, success rate, and statistics like minimum, maximum, and average latency. Understanding Ping Latency
